The monsoon season, which has just arrived in Thailand on schedule, escalates the risk of arbovirus from antigenic group B – well known in pre-Covid times as dengue fever. However, the disease is very dangerous. Thai doctors warn tourists about this. The fact is that mosquitoes carry the disease – and untreated pools of water and other containers are their natural breeding grounds. The public health doctor of Songkhla province Songkran Maechum warned about this on the pages of the Thai media.
“The monsoon season started last Friday and the rains are expected to cause a surge in dengue cases in Thailand, so be prepared,” he said. According to him, 32 cases of dengue fever were reported in Songkhla province in southern Thailand from January 1 to May 10 this year. The sick people are mostly local children and teenagers. Cases among tourists are not specified.
But just in case, the guests of Thailand were reminded of the basic facts about the disease and preventive measures:
- Dengue fever is caused by the bites of Aedes Aegypti (black and white striped) mosquitoes infected with the dengue virus. The virus incubates inside the mosquito for 8-10 days and accumulates in the salivary glands of the mosquito. When an infected mosquito bites someone, it sheds the infection and makes the person sick. Symptoms can range from mild to very severe and can even be fatal.
- Symptoms include fever for 2-7 days, headache, body pain, rash, and small red spots on the body, arms, and legs . Symptoms are often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and loss of appetite. If the symptoms are severe, the infected person should seek treatment at the hospital.
- The main principle of prevention, according to the doctor: “Don't let mosquitoes bite you and don't let them breed.”
- Tourists are advised to sleep in mosquito nets, use repellent, and, if possible, wear trousers and long-sleeved clothes when outdoors.
- The doctor also advises to destroy mosquito breeding sites. So the territory of the hotel can also be “probed”: containers with stagnant water inside or around must be removed or disinfected – as they will definitely attract mosquitoes.
