Earthquake in Antalya

Earthquake in Antalya< /p> Unpleasant “wake-up” was felt by a part of vacationers in Antalya. According to the Turkish disaster management agency AFAD, an earthquake with a magnitude of 3.7 occurred off the coast of the popular resort, from which “part of Antalya woke up.”

According to the agency, the earthquake occurred 35.60 km from the area Manavgat, in the bay of Antalya. The depth of the earthquake, whose magnitude was determined to be 3.7, was recorded as 55.34 km. Some of the frightened tourists felt the tremors, but there were no destruction.

Recall that “on the wave” of the earthquake in February and massive frightening forecasts, Antalya was included in the list of unsafe provinces. So, at the end of February, a geologist, a member of the Turkish Association of Petroleum Geologists and the Turkish National Committee of Engineering Geology Okan Tuysuz presented a list according to which 45 provinces of Turkey, including resorts, were recognized as dangerous, falling into the fault line. In particular, such well-known holiday destinations as Antalya, Istanbul, Mugla, known for the resorts of Bodrum, Marmaris, and others, as well as Izmir, are at risk. Read more at this link.

For reference, we add that the strength of earthquakes is expressed on the Richter scale, based on the assessment of the energy of seismic waves generated during tectonic shifts and causing the earthquake itself. The scale was developed by the American seismologist Charles Richter in 1935. It is important that the scale uses a logarithmic scale, which means that each integer value on the scale indicates an earthquake ten times larger than the previous one. Thus, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.0 on the Richter scale will cause 10 times more violent shaking of the earth's crust than an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.0. Therefore, earthquakes are conditionally divided into several groups according to their power and degree of destructiveness:

  1. 2.0 – the weakest tremors felt by a person;
  2. 4.5 – the weakest tremors leading to minor damage;
  3. 6.0 – moderate destruction on the surface;
  4. 8.5 – the strongest known earthquakes.
