It's a fiasco: the world's largest airline cancels 34,000 flights this summer

“Aviacollapse”, a severe shortage of staff and the resulting massive flight cancellations: last year's “nightmarish” European tourists may happen again. At least one of the largest airlines in Europe – the German Lufthansa – has already failed and officially announced the cancellation of more than 34,000 flights for the summer.

“We had to adjust the summer flight schedule,” the German media quoted the carrier as saying. The reason cited by the carrier is a shortage of staff “which is currently affecting the aviation industry.”

Most of the cancellations will affect Frankfurt and Munich airports. However, a spokesman for the carrier warned that more flights could be affected as “further daily cancellations could always be added.” Although, among other things, with the aim of “preventing last-minute cancellations and other failures,” these unpopular measures are being taken.

This measure will affect not only Lufthansa itself, but also its subsidiaries Eurowings and Swiss. Passengers of canceled flights are promised to be contacted in the near future.

According to experts, Lufthansa canceled about 2.2 thousand flights last summer season. At the same time, mass cancellations have already begun – just last week, the German national carrier was forced to cancel thousands of flights due to both a strike and an IT failure at the airport. Tourists have also been warned that the German trade union Verdi has called on airport workers in Frankfurt, Munich, Stuttgart, Hamburg, Dortmund, Hannover and Bremen to go on strike for 24 hours. Tourists have been urged to refrain from traveling due to the risk of disruptions.
