Having been “burnt” with the coronavirus pandemic, the Turkish authorities decided to hedge themselves in advance about the new current “agenda” with the disease, which is already feared by all the world's media. We are talking about the so-called monkeypox, which first appeared in the UK in the form of infection from person to person and “walked” through Europe. Although they promise not to declare a new pandemic, Turkey has said that they are already taking measures.
So far, the Turkish Ministry of Health says that there are no cases of identified monkeypox in Turkey. But this does not mean that the new virus will not come to Turkish resorts, experts add, because the British are now actively going on vacation to Turkey. However, the Turkish media broadcast optimists – those of the infectious disease specialists remind that humanity has been familiar with this virus for 50 years, it is not transmitted by airborne droplets among people and cannot take the place of the coronavirus. Therefore, “there is no reason not to come during the peak tourist season and the increase in air traffic.”
In particular, Dr. Mehmet Ceyhan, Professor, Head of the Department of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at the Faculty of Medicine, Hacettepe University, noted that monkeypox is not a new disease: “The virus is more common in those who eat tropical animals (mainly species found in Africa) and those who works in zoos. The disease is not airborne and is not fatal to humans. Usually a person develops rashes on the hands or on certain parts of the body, and in a decade of 2-4 weeks there is an improvement. It is very rare for a person to become infected from a person, there must be close contact! Thus, there is no danger and risk of its spread in Turkey,” the expert added.
At the same time, the expert added that studies are currently underway on how the virus could spread in 13 countries, including the United States. “There is no clarity yet, but the first results show that it is associated with a closed group, so it is very unlikely that it will spread to Turkey,” the expert added. But, as the Turkish authorities assure, security measures will be taken based on the results of the research.
