A sharp decrease in the number of Russian tourists in May was recorded on Maldives. The decrease in Russian tourists has led to a decline in their total number compared to last year. It is the drop in demand from the Russians, which still remains the first market for the Maldives, is regarded as a threat to reduce the tourist flow. However, tourism is showing growth on average so far.
According to the Ministry of Tourism, the number of tourists from Russia, the main tourist market of the Maldives, fell sharply in May. As of May 24, the number of arrivals from Russia amounted to 9,548 people, which is significantly less than in previous months – for example, more than 23 thousand Russians arrived. As a result, by May 24, 94,604 tourists arrived in the Maldives, which is 5.7% less than 100,230 tourists who visited the Maldives during the same period last year. At the same time, as they record in the Maldives, the number of our tourists has been systematically decreasing since January – so, if 20 thousand tourists arrived in March, then in April their number was already about 17 thousand, and in May there will be hardly 10 thousand.
“Despite the decline in May, in general, the tourism industry has shown growth. Compared to the same period last year, a 15.6% increase in the total number of tourists was registered. Statistics show that this year the country was visited by 782,889 tourists compared to 677,034 tourists in the same period last year.
