Tourists were shocked to receive a bill for 40,000 rubles for a snack on the beach

On the Greek islands, restaurants and bars are squeezed out of foreign tourists maximum money. So, during a vacation in Greece, a couple of British tourists refused to pay a bill of more than 40,000 rubles. The order of the travelers consisted of only two drinks and a small number of snacks.

According to British media, a tourist and her 19-year-old daughter fell into a state of shock after receiving a bill at a restaurant on the island of Mykonos in the Aegean Sea. According to the woman, they spent several hours on sun loungers and during this time ordered two cocktails and a portion of crab legs. But when they brought the bill, they saw staggering numbers: 520 euros for food and drinks (about 35,000 rubles) and 78 euros (about 5,000 rubles) for tips.

Complaining about the huge bill to her travel agent, she admitted that they used the sun loungers for several hours, but could not believe that a short rest on the beach could cost them so much. There was no price list anywhere. It turned out that the tourists weren't the first to get billed for a sky-high bill at a restaurant by the sea.

“We had a lovely day at the beach, but please warn your future customers that the restaurant-bar we visited, charged us 600 euros for two cocktails and a portion of crab legs. Although we expected that the bill would not exceed 200 euros (13,300 rubles), suddenly the waiter asked us to pay three times more,” the traveler was indignant.

Greece is highly dependent on tourism: every fourth inhabitant of the country works in the tourism sector. This is not the first time that foreign holidaymakers are perceived as a bag of money and deceived by locals. This is especially easy when guests do not speak Greek.

For example, in pre-Covid 2019, a tourist in a Mykonos restaurant went berserk after being charged 591 euros (39,000 rubles at today’s exchange rate) for just six pieces of squid. That same year, a group of British tourists paid 82 euros (5,500 rubles) for eight soft drinks after visiting a restaurant in Rhodes. In 2017, a British traveler claimed that he and his elderly parents were deceived and that the 37,000 ruble lunch bill for lobsters and oysters at the Trattoria Casanova restaurant in Venice was fake, as waiters brought some of the dishes and put them on the table, even though the guests didn't even order them.
